The AFSCME Council 5 Board is proposing a per capita dues increase of $5 a month beginning January 1, 2015. Please encourage all union members to attend an informational meeting to learn about our FIVE FOR THE FIGHT campaign and discuss how we can arm our union for the battles ahead. Attached is a list of 17 meetings during the month of June. Here's our timeline for the decision: • Informational meetings June • Delegates vote at convention September 12 • Increase would take effect January 1, 2015 We fused our fingers into one mighty fist when we created Council 5 ten years ago. That was the last time we raised our per capita dues. Thanks to the decisions we made then, we've survived a decade that destroyed many other unions. We beat back the Right to Work for Less. We dumped team extreme. We fought two government shutdowns. We won countless contract battles. We taxed the rich to save public services and our jobs. We prevented the layoff of thousands of state and local government workers. And we expanded collective bargaining rights for child care providers. Those battles have taken a serious toll on us and our budget. Now, we face a $5 million shortfall over the next four years. Our budget reflects our values and our priorities for the future. We choose to continue building power for workers and we hope our members think their standard of living is worth $5 more each month. That's less than the cost of two cups of coffee. It's worth five bucks to preserve our collective bargaining rights, protect our job security, win good contracts, defend our retirement security, and fight for dignity and respect. Our opponents are fighting harder and our challenges are tougher than ever before. If we unite behind FIVE FOR THE FIGHT, we can strengthen our union and secure a better future for our members and all working families.
